What is Malware?
The word "Malware" is short for malicious software. Malware includes computer viruses, spyware, adware, trojan horses, worms, rootkits, backdoors, keyloggers & screen scrapers just to name the main ones. This type of software is created with the intent to infiltrate or damage a computer without the computer owner's consent. What is a Computer Virus?
A computer virus is an executable program that can copy itself and infect a computer. These executable programs are carried to a target computer (the one to become infected) in a variety of ways such as sent over the internet or on a disk, CD, DVD or USB drive. Viruses rely on user intervention to spread such as opening an infected file, document or email.
What is a Trojan?
A Trojan is a non-self-replicating software that appears to the user as a program that will perform something the user desires but instead gives others unauthorized access to the user's computer system. Once a Trojan has been installed the hacker who targetd the user may be able to remotely do a variety of things such as stealing sensitive files, viewing the user's screen, typing on the user's computer, logging the user's keystrokes to capture sensitive information such as username and passwords to other software or websites.
What is Spyware or Adware?
These types of programs are for-profit programs designed to monitor a users browsing habits and display unsolicited advertisments via popups, new browser windows or redirecting the user's browsers to other sites in an effort to force the user to a site where the creator of the spyware will profit. Spyware programs are most often contained in peer-to-peer applications such as in illegal music or file sharing applications.

Experience Using Avast!®
Over the years I have bought and tried most of the other major anti-virus programs out there. Each had a few nice features but in the end either didn't fully protect me or installed a number of other programs that caused my computers to run slow or become unstable. Most often the only resolution to fix has been to completely uninstall the other virus software.
